Basic Rules for Year 3 and 4 Tennis Competition

Team Composition

A team consists of 4 players, 2 girls and 2 boys.

Players should be from Year 3/4  i.e. mixture of the two year groups can be used or your team can
be from one year group.

Players should be ranked in order of ability from 1 to 4 (1 being the highest rank player)

Court Size

Mini Tennis Red is played on badminton-sized courts.
Courts are ideally inside, but can also be played outdoors.

The ‘Short & Fat’ area of the badminton court should be used, so that the whole area of the court
is used, except the back tramlines.

Scoring

Mini Tennis Scoring does not use traditional tennis scoring i.e. 15,30,40 etc. Instead, simple
numbered scoring is used, i.e. 1,2,3,4 etc. It will be first to 10 points and called a Match Tie
Break. At 9-9 only one further point will be played.

All points count and however many polnts a player scores (win or lose) this goes to the overall
teams score.

Duration/Length of Matches

A Match Tie-Break takes approximately 10 minutes to play

Playing

The serve is decided by a ‘toss’ at the start of the match.

The nominated person serves for the first point; it then alternates every 2 points.
When serving, players should stand behind the inner back tramline.

The serve must be hit ‘under-arm’. Serves should be hit diagonally, landing anywhere in the
opposite diagonal quarter of the court. No service box.

Eguipment & Resources

Sponge ball to be used indoors and a Mini Tennis Red Ball outdoors. The County Final will be
indoors so getting competitors used to hitting a sponge ball is preferable.                                                                                                           Players will need to bring their own Tennis rackets. Tennis balls will be provided.
